Biography of Ambassador Hilda Suka Mafudze
Ambassador Hilda Suka Mafudze is the newly appointed Resident Representative of AU for the Southern African Regional Office (AU-SARO) based in the Republic of Malawi. She brings to this role a distinguished record of public service, diplomacy, and leadership spanning more than two decades.
Before her current appointment, Ambassador Mafudze served as the African Union Ambassador to the United States of America, where she advanced Africa’s interests in political, economic, and cultural cooperation, and worked to strengthen Africa-U.S. relations. Prior to that, she was Ambassador of Zimbabwe to Malawi, and earlier to Sudan and South Sudan, where she dedicated herself to fostering peace, stability, and mutually beneficial partnerships. She has also served as a Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister for Information in Zimbabwe, where she contributed to governance and policy development at the national level. Her diplomatic career has been marked by a strong commitment to multilateralism, regional integration, and Africa’s development agenda. She has represented both the African Union and Zimbabwe at numerous international fora, championing peace, security, and sustainable development as central pillars for Africa’s growth.
Ambassador Mafudze is the recipient of several honorary doctorates, awarded in recognition of her outstanding contributions to diplomacy, leadership, and service to the African continent. She is also an alumna of University of Leicester with further training in International Relations and the World Order.
In her new role as Resident Representative based to the Republic of Malawi, Ambassador Mafudze is committed to deepening the partnership between Malawi and the African Union, supporting the country’s development aspirations, and advancing the broader goals of Agenda 2063 — “Africa’s long-term vision for growth and self reliance’’. She remains particularly passionate about women’s empowerment, youth advancement, and the pursuit of peace as the foundation for Africa’s prosperity.
