Father’s Day The date of celebration of Father’s Day is not without controversy. Specifically, there are two stories as to when the first Father’s Day was celebrated in the United States. One account suggests that the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910. We are told that Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honoring and celebrating her father while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at church in 1909. To show her appreciation for her father’s hard work and love, Sonora thought there should be a day to pay homage to him and other dads like him. The second account for the first Father’s Day happened on July 5, 1908. Grace Golden Clayton suggested to the minister of the local Methodist church that they hold services to celebrate fathers after a deadly mine explosion killed 361 men in West Virginia. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson, through an executive order, designated the third Sunday, in June as the official day to celebrate Father’s Day. However, it wasn’t until 1972, during the Nixon administration that Father’s Day was officially recognized as a national holiday. Again, Happy Father’s Day to seven million Fathers and counting! What is Juneteenth? Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday. This edition explores the stereotype of the “Angry Black Woman”. This pervasive stereotype characterizes Black women as more hostile, aggressive, overbearing, illogical, ill-tempered and bitter. Those articles are “How to Save your Home (and Equity) from Foreclosure” by Brian Ponder, Esq. and “Real Estate Closing – What you Should Expect” by Tarik Davis, Esq.
