Bio for Captain Michael Kozo
Captain Michael Kozo is an avid educator and the Commanding Officer of the Fire Safety Education Unit (FSEU) for the FDNY. Captain Kozo graduated from Queens College with a degree in Physical Education. In May 2003, he was hired by the FDNY and was assigned to E-307 in Jackson Heights as a firefighter. In June 2011, he was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to Manhattan. In May 2016, he was detailed to FSEU, and then in April 2019, Captain Kozo was promoted to Captain and officially assigned to the unit. Captain Kozo is an active member of EMAC (Educational Messages Advisory Committee) for NFPA and has successfully completed the Fire and Life Safety Educator 1 National certification.
The mission of FSEU is to convey and promote the importance of fire and life safety education. While utilizing operational data to evaluate citywide fire incidents, the unit effectively coordinates outreach activities based on trends relating to fire incidents. Furthermore, FSEU employs vital partnerships throughout the city, in order to conduct successful educational and fire prevention campaigns. The goal is to continually educate the public with critical life saving strategies that focus on fire prevention. FSEU’s vision is to eliminate residential fire deaths in NYC.
